The Mentorship Program

Mentee Application

The Goals of the Program:

  • To collaborate and recruit Syrian physicians in the United States and Canada (Mentors) who are willing to share their knowledge, experience and expertise by providing advise, counsel and mentorship to Syrian physicians in training (Mentees). 
  • To provide all Syrian physicians in training (i.e. students, residents, fellows) with career choice advice, patient-care advice, medical education counsel, and academic mentorship.
  • To mentor Syrian medical students and residents interested in obtaining a higher education in the United States and Canada (i.e. medical school, residency, research).

The Benefits of the Program:

For the Syrian physicians in the United States and Canada:

  • to lend a hand to Syrian students, residents and ultimately the country of Syria in improving medical education and healthcare
  • to channel knowledge, experience and expertise through counseling and mentorship
  • to network, organize and collaborate

For the Syrian physicians in training (i.e. students, residents, fellows) residing in Syria: 

  • to obtain direct contact with a Syrian physician in the United Stated and Canada in any requested field
    • to facilitate career choice advice
    • to provide patient-care advice
    • to receive medical education counsel, and academic mentorship
  • a method to receive resources about medical societies, conferences, CME opportunities in the United States and Canada              

For the Syrian medical students and residents who are interested in pursuing medical education in the United States and Canada 

  • to establish a direct link of communication with experienced Syrian physicians in the U.S. or Canada who will mentor and counsel the students/residents throughout the process
  • receiving a timeline of the required steps
  • obtaining the important reading materials
  • obtaining instructions about obtaining visas
  • obtaining resources in improving communication skills

 THE MENTORS:

 Application Process:  

  • Interested SAMS-NEW members can sign up for the program by filling out an application. Information provided by the mentor will only be used to properly assign mentors to be paired with those requesting assistance. 
  • This application will be forwarded to the mentorship coordinator and/or committee. SAMS-NEW members that have applied will be contacted and informed of their assignment.

Expectation of Mentors: 

  • Provide social, emotional and academic support, counsel and advice to Syrian mentees.
  • Take brief notes to help in future meetings with particular a mentee, and to assist in future mentorship relationships.
  • Assess the needs, strengths and weaknesses of the mentee; work on the list of issues of interest provided by the participant.
  • Meet with the participants, over the phone, on a regular basis, at least four times per year. Voice over IP, online voice messenger, and further information on other types of methods can be provided by the committee upon request.
  • Be accessible and prompt in responses to questions; a reasonable time for reply to an email, should be no more than two weeks.
  • Get to know the participants well, including but not limited to, aspects of their academic, social background and any additional information that may aid in providing them with effective counsel.
  • Provide updates on assigned mentee twice a year. Feedback from both parties, the mentor and mentee, will help assist in making necessary modification to the program.
  • The mentee(s) should not be abandoned unless another mentor is secured. The oversight committee will make the arrangements for a replacement mentor.
  • Only two mentees can be assisted at once, in order to provide a more effective relationship.
  • Fill an evaluation form for The Mentorship Program to suggest areas of improvement.

 THE MENTEE:

 Application Process:  

  • The Mentorship Program is open to any Syrian medical student, resident, or fellow, interested in participating. It is suggested that those interested in participating apply early in their medical training years to receive the maximum benefit.
  • Interested Syrian medical students, residents, or fellows can sign up for the program by filling out an application. Information provided by the mentee will only be used to properly assign them to be paired with an appropriate mentor.
  • The applicant will be contacted by a SAMS-NEW mentorship committee member that will inform the applicant of their assigned mentor.

Responsibility of the Mentee:     

  • Fill an application and provide all necessary information requested. The more details that are include, the better assistance that can be provided.
  • Bring an agenda of discussion items or issues of interest to all the meetings. Examples include certain difficulties with education, carrier choices, continuing medical education (CME) or questions posed in clinical areas.
  • Be on time for meetings and prepared to maximize the benefit of the program.
  • Be committed to participate in the program until goals are achieved.
  • Be understanding and realistic about goals achieved throughout the program. The program is designed to assist and aid in the decision making process; participants should use a wholesome approach in their decision making and not ONLY rely on the mentor.
  • Understand that SAMS-NEW and the mentorship program is striving to provide accurate, prompt and helpful advice on a voluntary basis. SAMS-NEW and SAMS-NEW members are not in any way responsible for any negative consequences that may occur due to decisions made. The mentee should always use sound judgment, and make decisions based on information from many sources.
  • Evaluate the mentorship program by filling out the survey and providing suggested areas of improvement.
